Application: Allocation of study places for Master's degree program
In order to get a place at the Media University, you must complete a personal selection interview in addition to fulfilling the formal admission requirements.
Step 1: Your application
First fill out the online application form and upload your CV. Please apply for your preferred place of study, taking into account the language of instruction offered (Campus Berlin and Campus Frankfurt: English; Campus Cologne: German). You can specify a preferred date for the selection interview in the comments section.
You can apply for a place at any time up to the start of your studies, but we recommend that you apply as early as possible in order to prepare for your studies.
You will receive confirmation of receipt of your application by e-mail with a request to send us the following application documents by e-mail:
- Letter of motivation
- Your university entrance qualification
- Your degree certificate from your undergraduate degree program (Bachelor, Magister, Diplom etc.) plus Diploma Supplement (EU only). If you do not yet have your degree certificate from your undergraduate degree program, please send us a current grade transcript instead and submit the certificate later.
- Proof of your academic achievements in the undergraduate degree program (Transcript of Records): Credit points and module content descriptions (in German or English) in the case of a foreign (technical) university entrance qualification, state recognition* of equivalence to the German (technical) Abitur in the case of a foreign undergraduate degree, an authorized translation of the certificate if applicable
- for non-native speakers of German or English: proof of language competence in German or English at least at CEFR level B2 (CEFR level C1 for the degree programs of the Department of Journalism and Communication), if applicable, further proof of study-relevant skills and qualifications regarding education and further training, practical professional experience, etc.
- Applicants for the M.A. Communication Design and Creative Strategies are required to submit a portfolio with at least three independent design projects.
- Applicants for the M.A. Digital Journalism submit work samples and an essay, which are reviewed by the department head.
As soon as we have received these documents digitally, we will arrange an appointment for the selection interview with you.
Please bring certified copies of your university entrance qualification and your degree certificate from the undergraduate degree program plus Diploma Supplement (EU only) to the personal appointment.
*You can obtain them from the Certificate Recognition Office of the Berlin Senate Administration, Uni-Assist or other service providers. The costs for the certificate evaluation by Uni-Assist in the amount of 75 euros will be reimbursed by the Media University after enrollment and upon presentation of the original payment receipt!
Stage 2: Personal selection interview
You will have a personal selection interview for the Master’s degree program with the head of department of your chosen degree program. Specifically, we would like to find out more about you, your background, your subject-specific knowledge, your career prospects and your expectations of the degree program.
During the interview, applicants for the M.A. in Communication Design and Creative Strategies also have the opportunity to present their design portfolio.
If you live abroad or cannot make a personal visit for other reasons, we may be able to offer you an interview via Skype. Please contact the Student Advisory Service.
Stage 3: Allocation of study places
Within about two weeks of the personal appointment, the Media University Examination Board will decide on your admission to study at the Media University and you will receive written notification from us.

Travel expenses
We ask for your understanding that travel expenses incurred during the selection process cannot be covered by the Media University.
