FAQ: Dual study program

  • How does the dual study program work?

During the lecture period (that’s 16 weeks plus two exam weeks in each semester), you will spend 2 or 3 days a week at the university. The other 2 or 3 days of the week you work at your company.

Then there is the semester break at the Media University (lecture-free period). During these six to seven weeks, you work full-time at your company. As vacation cannot be taken on lecture or exam days, this is probably the best time to take your vacation. Any vacation arrangements will be set out in your employment contract.

  • Where can I get more information on finding a practice partner and the general conditions of the dual study program?

If your application is successful, you will receive an invitation to an online information event.

  • How long does the dual study program last?

The dual study program usually lasts 3.5 years – that’s 7 semesters. The B.A. Game Design and Interactive Media course lasts 8 semesters (4 years).

  • How high are the tuition fees?

Your partner company will pay the monthly tuition fees for you. You do not have to pay them yourself.

  • Am I enrolled as a student? What is my status?

As a dual student at the Media University, you are a full-time student.

  • Am I entitled to BAföG as a dual student?

No, as a dual student you are unfortunately not entitled to BAföG.

  • Do I get a semester ticket?

Yes, all students at the Media University receive a semester ticket. Your company may cover the costs. So make sure you ask about this in your job interview.

  • How do I apply? First at the Media University or first at a company?

First, you apply to us at the Media University. We will check your formal requirements (usually a high school diploma or full entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences) and then send you the contract documents. Under certain conditions, you can also start your studies with us without a (technical) high school diploma. We will be happy to advise you in a personal meeting.

As soon as you have received the contract documents, you can start looking for a suitable partner company. In an online information event, we will give you tips for your company search and check your application documents in an individual consultation. Depending on the job and requirements profile, we can also provide you with partner companies from our network.

If you have independently found a company for the dual study program, please contact the Student Advisory Service, which will then inform the company about the further procedure and prepare the contract documents for the desired study and cooperation start semester.

  • When do I write my Bachelor’s thesis?

The Bachelor’s thesis is written in the final months of the last semester. During this phase, you will work 20 hours/week at the company. The other 20 hours/week are available to you for the Bachelor’s thesis.

Questions about the dual practice

  • Do I receive any remuneration from my company?

Yes, in addition to the tuition fees, your company will usually pay you a contribution towards your living costs. You discuss the amount yourself with the company.

  • What happens if I have not found a company by the time I start my studies?

In this case, there are two options:

    1. you can start directly on the traditional degree course and, as originally planned, begin your studies on your preferred date. With its high practical component, opportunities for a semester/internship abroad and much more, the traditional degree course also offers you plenty of scope to develop your individual skills and get off to a flying start in working life later on. Ask the student advisory service for more information. They will be happy to provide you with a clear comparison between the two study models. Please note that there are monthly tuition fees for the traditional study model.

    2. you stick to your original plan to study dual studies at the Media University, but postpone the start of your studies and use the time until the next semester to continue looking for a company together with us. The Student Advisory Service will also be happy to advise you personally about the possibility of a semester of study.

  • Is there a probationary period?

Yes, as is usual in many companies, there is a 6-month probationary period.

  • Is it possible to work 100% remotely in the company?

Remote working is sometimes part of the company concept. This is legitimate as long as you also agree with this way of working (location-independent mobile working, completely online).

  • Am I entitled to vacation?

The minimum vacation entitlement is 20 days per year. Vacation days can only be taken outside of lecture and examination days.
