Thinking outside the box: book presentation with author and photographer Maria Schiffer

June 26, 2020

On June 22, 2020, the internationally renowned photographer and author Maria Schiffer was a guest speaker in the lecture “Interculturalism” at the Media University Berlin, where she visited lecturer Sophie Carls to present her story cookbook “EATING WITH AFRICA”, published by DK-Verlag.

Maria Schiffer travelled through ten different countries on the African continent for over a year. On her journey she met the most diverse people, their customs, traditions and culture. Through recipes and the regional cuisine she gained access to the most diverse people and their unique life stories. With her book EATING WITH AFRICA Maria Schiffer passes on her stories in this country.

In the lecture Maria Schiffer shared her unforgettable experiences with the students. She provided exciting insights into her experiences with unknown people on another continent, who welcomed her with warmth and cordiality, invited her into their home and cooked together with her, giving personal insights into their family stories. As the most valuable experience from her journey she took with her the realization that nothing is impossible. She passed on to the students that they should always be open to challenges, because only on these we can grow.

Maria Schiffer also regularly cooks the recipes from the book online on Instagram live together with her fans. In addition, Maria can also be watched cooking her collected African recipes on 10 July 2020 on ZDF in the programme “Aspects” at 23.15 hrs.

We would like to thank Maria Schiffer warmly for her lively and inspiring lecture about an exciting and fascinating journey through a huge continent, characterized by fascinating diversity. Her visit greatly enriched our lecture and gave the students great impressions of how to overcome cultural barriers by cooking together.
