Experiencing design business and culture first hand
From pre-Christmas Cologne to almost late summer Barcelona: at the end of November, communication design students travelled to the Catalan art and design metropolis with their lecturer Prof. Felix Thomas as part of the "Creative Leadership" module.
On the first day in Barcelona, Prof. Felix Thomas led the students of the M.A. Communication Design program of Media University Cologne to the international branding agency Story & Co. Together with Tania Schäfer he had founded the agency back in 2004 as an offshoot of the London-based mother agency Smallbackroom. In 2009, Felix Thomas left the agency and founded his office for strategic design in Düsseldorf.
The managing director of the agency, which is currently employing a student of the B.A. Graphic Design and Visual Communication in an internship, spoke with the students about the versatile tasks and the exciting exchange with international clients. A short interview in English was shot and can now be watched on the Media University Instagram channel: https://www.instagram.com/tv/BuTVeXhnJl1/
In addition to this “business meeting” a visit to the design museum as well as the tour to a Gaudi house on the Passeig de Gràcia – crowned by a walk on the beach promenade – were parts of the field trip program. “Barcelona is a city where you can literally breathe in design. Here design and architectural history was written. The students experience first-hand how design business and culture inspire each other” Thomas said about Barcelona as a field trip destination for design students.
