Career history

Dr. Sebastian Schnieder is Professor of Psychology at the Media University and founder and CEO of the Institute for Experimental Psychophysiology. In his interdisciplinary scientific training, he has dealt with economic as well as technical and psychological topics. His publications focus on the speech-based detection of fatigue and depression. In numerous and extensive research projects, he deals with the effects of light on people and the recognition of human emotional states. Project partners include major industrial partners such as Osram, SONY, Airbus and BMW. At his Institute for Experimental Psychophysiology, his research focuses on smart user state detection. Professor Schnieder is also involved in the DIN expert panel on the effects of light on people.

Courses (selection)

  • Practice in media and business psychology
  • Work and organizational psychology
  • User Experience

Main areas of work and research

  • Affective Computing
  • Smart Wearable Technology
  • Psychophysiology
  • Human Centric Lighting
  • Paralinguistic audio signal processing:
  • Voice signals convey semantic, syntactic and paralinguistic information (i.e. voice quality, articulation characteristics and prosody) about people. Emotional, cognitive and physical states (e.g. tiredness, suicidal intent, depression, cold) can also be detected in voice signals alongside stable speaker characteristics (such as height, gender, age, weight and origin).
