Building one’s own online store

December 10, 2020

From conception to implementation: Media University students on the B.A. Digital Marketing and E-Commerce course in Berlin and the M.A. Public Relations and Digital Marketing course in Cologne have learned the most important basics of e-commerce under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Klaus Kuenen and will soon be building their own online stores.

Overview

Whether analyzing the market and competition, researching current trends or investigating a potential clientele for a specific product: the development of an online store should be well thought out and already have a solid foundation in the conceptual phase. In the later practical implementation, the students build all stores without having to acquire programming skills beforehand. Instead, store systems are used, as the focus of the course should be more on target group-oriented communication and digital marketing.

Analytical expertise meets creative brainstorming

In addition to the analytical side, visual design also plays a central role in the world of e-commerce. As a rule, the visual appearance also determines whether online customers feel addressed. The students therefore used a mood board to develop suitable designs for their online store and also incorporated technical criteria such as usability, user experience and SEO optimization into their concepts.

In this way, exciting concepts for online stores in the DIY, fashion and food & lifestyle sectors, among others, were created during this year’s course in Cologne. Next week, things will get serious in Berlin, where the ideas and concepts will also be put into practice with the help of store systems. We are already looking forward to the results!
