Game design student wins character competition

September 6, 2022

IdeenExpo 2022 is Europe’s largest youth event for technology and science. B.A. Game Design und Interaktive Medien (B.A. Game Design and Interactive Media, German only) student Isaac Pfeifer won the mascot competition organized by communications agency Factory-C for the theme area “The Game” with his computer mouse character.

Overview

“Cool”, “trendy”, “gaming-savvy”, “proactive”, “confident” and “social” were some of the character traits assigned to the figure in the briefing. Other aspects also played a role for the “Concept Art” course with Prof. Christian Retzlaff: possible design elements and also “no-gos” were defined.

The growing, diverse field of digital games, which ranges from retro consoles, browser games and game apps to modern virtual and augmented reality applications, offers plenty of inspiration.

Participation in the competition was arranged by Prof. Anke Schweiger.

Isaac Pfeifer's lively character combines retro and modern gaming elements, bridging the gap between different aspects of the growing world of digital games.

The mascot to be created then had to be depicted in a specific pose. The game design students also had to document their idea development and implementation process.

Some of the student designs made it onto the shortlist:

  • Also in the final selection: Character “Occy” by Mandy Kricke
  • Character „Illumini“ by Mandy Kricke
  • Controller robot by Isaac Pfeifer
The mascot and the accompanying documentation were shown to over 400,000 visitors in the “Digital Worlds” themed area as part of the 9-day IdeenExpo.
