What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Media University Frankfurt?
The first thing that comes to mind is my future opportunities. After graduating from high school in 2017, I didn’t yet know how I wanted to shape my professional future and which area would suit me best. After I found out that I was interested in digitalization and therefore the development of the media industry and that Media University offered a suitable degree course, I finally knew which path I wanted to take.
You are studying Media and Event Management. Have you already been able to gain professional experience?
As a working student at the HAVAS Media Group in the 3rd and 4th semester, I was able to learn a lot about digital marketing and worked in campaign management there. During my internship, I also got to know the creative side of online marketing. My main tasks here include brainstorming for suitable standard special advertising formats and creating presentations.
How did the internship search and application phase go?
I wanted to use my internship to get to know other areas than I already knew and I really wanted to work in the media city of Cologne.
I searched the Internet for job advertisements and applied for the position in digital conception marketing at AdAlliance. After a short time, I received an invitation to an interview and a week later I was accepted. Shortly afterwards, Corona became more and more important, but I was told from the beginning that nothing would stand in the way of an internship in the home office. However, my application was one of the last to go through during the pandemic.
Why did you choose the B.A. Media and Event Management course and to study at Media University Frankfurt?
The Media and Event Management course consists of two sectors that I am very interested in. It quickly became clear to me that I wanted to work in the media industry, but I was also interested in planning and organizing larger events. The interview with the Media University’s student advisory service ultimately convinced me.
What content from your studies is reflected in your work or helps you in your work?
The “Digital Media Management” module helped me a lot, as I was able to apply the content of the lecture very well in my work as a working student (campaign management). In general, however, the content of the practical modules is also very helpful.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans definitely include a Master’s degree in Public Relations and Digital Marketing at the Media University, as it fits in perfectly with my previous professional experience in digital marketing. I will also be working as a student trainee again in the 6th semester. (Whether at AdAlliance in Frankfurt or again at HAVAS is not yet certain). And it’s still up in the air whether I’ll do my Master’s part-time or full-time.
What do you particularly appreciate about your work and what is a challenge?
I think the biggest challenge so far has been starting in the home office. Thanks to my great team, everything went smoothly and I was very well received, but it’s still a different starting position. Many impressions that you would have gained in the office are unfortunately lost in the current situation. But the cohesion within my team is so important to everyone that a “coffee call” takes place every morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., where the focus is on the opportunity for a relaxed exchange.
Which professional projects that you are currently working on do you particularly enjoy?
During my internship, for example, I create concepts for Disney films such as Frozen 2, beauty brands such as L’oreal, insurance companies such as HUK24, Ferrero products such as Kinderriegel or, most recently, for the condom brand Durex or the online store Eis. This means that many areas are covered and the brainstorming sessions for brands such as Durex are of course very exciting and amusing within the team.
What advice would you give new students?
I would give new students the following advice: Believe in yourself! Even if it’s a slogan that everyone knows, that’s exactly what I learned at the Media University. In the interview with Ms. Walliser, the topic of the Deutschlandstipendium came up. As my A-levels weren’t exactly the best, I never thought my chances of getting a scholarship were high. Ms. Walliser explained to me that it wasn’t just a question of academic performance and that I should apply in any case – six months later I had my scholarship in my pocket, which of course goes down very well with companies.
What are the best qualities for a student on your course to have?
In my opinion, being open and communicative, always staying positive and seeing the best in everything, even if it’s sometimes difficult, is not only an advantage when studying. A positive charisma can simply make a big difference to the person you are talking to.
