Master’s degree in Visual Communication: successful collaboration with the Federal University of Applied Sciences

February 20, 2025

The Media University in Cologne offers a practice-oriented education in the “Visual Communication” Master’s degree program, which prepares students specifically for the requirements of the communications industry. An outstanding example of this is the project in the winter semester 2024/25, in which our students developed a communication concept for the Federal University of Applied Sciences under the direction of graduate designer Frank Engel.

Excursion to the Federal University of Applied Sciences

In the winter semester 2024/25, our students on the “Visual Communication” Master’s course at the Media University Cologne worked on an exciting practical project under the supervision of graduate designer Frank Engel. The aim was to develop a communication concept for the “General Internal Administration” department of the Federal University of Applied Sciences (HS Bund). The campaign was designed to make the “Administrative Management” course more attractive to potential students and attract more qualified applicants in the long term.

On November 15, 2024, our students visited the Federal University of Applied Sciences to gain a deeper insight into the courses on offer and the project’s target group. During the excursion, they took part in a course on administrative management and were able to engage in intensive discussions with students from the Federal University of Applied Sciences in group work. Our students also developed targeted questionnaires to better understand the needs and expectations of potential applicants. These findings flowed directly into the concept development of the communication campaign.

Final presentation and implementation

Prof. Dr. Inga Mertin, who previously worked as a lecturer in psychology at the Media University Cologne, was the direct contact person for the project. On January 24, 2025, our students presented their final group work in a final presentation to Prof. Dr. Mertin and her colleague, Prof. Dr. Hans Markus Heimann.

The communication concepts presented included:

The development of a new logo for the “Administrative Management” degree program.
The conception and design of an internet and social media presence for the department.
A serial poster campaign to increase the visibility of the degree program.
The representatives of the Federal University of Applied Sciences were impressed by the creative and practical solutions of our students. The innovative approaches and professional designs have the potential to increase the attractiveness of the course in the long term.

The successful collaboration with the Federal University of Applied Sciences shows once again how important practical projects are in the course of study in order to solve real challenges in the communications industry creatively and effectively.
