Course content and teaching

The Graphic Design and Visual Communication (B.A.) program in the Design department teaches the theoretical, technological and creative basics of designing for print and digital. You will be introduced to typography, logo design, corporate design, poster design, illustration, photography, film, motion design, editorial design, spatial graphic design, and web and app design. This will prepare you perfectly to start your creative career as a freelancer or junior designer in a design studio, advertising agency, or marketing department.

The education at the Media University is:

broad:
You will learn all the relevant aspects of visual communication to help you find your way and position yourself in this interesting field.

interdisciplinary:
You will study at a university that also trains students for other media-related professions. This makes it easy to collaborate with future journalists, psychologists and event managers.

Modules

General education modules: academic propaedeutics, economics,
media and communication studies, intercultural studies, empirical methodology, personal and social skills

General education elective modules: media law, social sciences, social psychology, media technology, digital economy, business English, second foreign language (e.g. Spanish, Chinese)

Subject-specific modules: design process and creativity, color, form, composition, graphics and images, art/design history and theory, photography, film and post-production, layout, pre-press/press, graphics in space and environment, motion design, fundamentals of interface and interaction design, interactive media, self-presentation, revision and various project workshops

Dual study: the modules differ slightly due to the increased practical component in the cooperating company.

Dual studies – study and work

At the Media University, the bachelor’s program in graphic design and visual communication (B.A.) is also offered on a dual basis: The bachelor’s degree (B.A.) can be achieved in seven semesters in a dual-practice-integrating manner (without an additional IHK examination). „Dual-practice-integrating” means that students work in a cooperating company parallel to their studies. In addition to imparting theoretical knowledge, practical projects in companies are integrated into the studies. The Media University supports applicants in finding a cooperating company based on its own corporate network.

Internship

All of the Media University’s classic bachelor’s programs include a six-month mandatory internship. Students of B.A. Graphic Design and Visual Communication have completed internships at a wide range of companies. Here is a selection:

A large proportion of the alumni of the Graphic Design and Visual Communication (B.A.) program at the Media University now work in advertising or media agencies, for example as junior art directors, screen designers, app designers, UX designers, communication designers or project managers.

The bachelor’s program in Graphic Design and Visual Communication (B.A.) at the Media University is state-approved by the Berlin Senate Administration and accredited by the German Accreditation Council.
