Career entry as Junior Performance Marketing Manager

February 16, 2023

With the marketing expertise she acquired during her Master’s degree, Fang Wen Hsiao has succeeded in landing her dream job. In her new role as Junior Performance Marketing Manager, she analyzes and optimizes online campaigns. In this interview, she told us more about her time at the Media University, her M.A. in International Marketing and Media Management and her plans for the future.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Media University?

When I think back to my time studying at Media University, the first thing that comes to mind is how friendly I was welcomed. The university administration was very supportive of me as an international student, including when I applied for my visa, which I really appreciated.

The lecturers and fellow students were full of passion and enthusiasm for marketing topics of all kinds, and I really enjoyed the courses.

You have successfully completed your studies in the M.A. International Marketing and Media Management. What do you work as now?

I am permanently employed as a Junior Performance Marketing Manager at Qunomedical in Berlin. Using the strategic marketing approaches I learned at Media University and my previous work experience, I work in search engine marketing to reach potential patients and open the door to the world’s best information on doctors, clinics and care.

What do you particularly like about your work and what is challenging?

What I like most about this position is that it offers me the opportunity to challenge and develop myself in the SEA field and that the focus is on pursuing and achieving goals together as a team. I currently support PPC marketing in B2B and B2C and contribute to data-based advertising optimization in the markets by analyzing statistical interaction and feedback. The biggest challenge is to find out why the advertising campaigns are not performing well, as so many factors can have an impact. Therefore, detective skills are a must.

Did you gain any practical experience before starting your career that you would like to share with us?

Before I found out what area of marketing I wanted to specialize in, I did several internships and student jobs to find out. I started with event marketing in the eMobility industry, where I was responsible for creating English content for social media, newsletters and the website.

The second work experience was similar but with more analytical skills. Thanks to this experience, I was sure that performance marketing was the right thing for me as I am interested in analyzing campaign data and ad performance.

Therefore, I focused on SEM afterwards and honed my skills in an advertising agency during my third student job.

Why did you choose the M.A. International Marketing and Media Management program back then? And why did you decide to study at the Media University?

The Online Marketing Communication course in particular was very helpful for me in gaining a practical understanding of how to set up advertising campaigns in social networks and how to use and calculate the budget efficiently. In addition, the projects we did in some seminars not only helped us develop analytical skills but also deepened our perspective and business knowledge. I would especially like to thank Prof. Dr. Sören Bär.

The exciting curriculum was the main reason why the Media University was the first choice for me to further deepen my marketing knowledge.

What are your plans for the future?

My goal at the moment is to build a career in Berlin. That’s why I want to move more towards leadership and ownership in the future. Not to wait for tasks to be assigned to me, but instead to be able to find opportunities for the team and pursue them. To be the “thought leader” who shows others how to do it.

Relax and enjoy your time studying abroad! Berlin and the Media University offer many opportunities - so take some time to make the most of them.

What advice would you give to students who decide to study in Germany at the Media University?

As for the proposal, I would say that you should gain as much work experience as possible during your studies. Since it is very difficult to find a full-time job in Berlin (but no more difficult than finding an apartment), it is very important to gain work experience before you graduate.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We wish you all the best for your future!
