Sen Lukas Tiel, an intern abroad during his psychology studies at the personnel service provider YoungCapital in Amsterdam, was a complete success.

At which company and in which department did you complete your internship?

I completed my internship as an International Recruiter in the Multilingual Team at YoungCapital.

How did you like it? Would you recommend it to other Media University students?

Very much! The team is super open-minded and international, there are many company events and a high level of responsibility/scope of tasks for interns – definitely a recommendation, and they are also constantly looking for interns.

What was the biggest challenge during your internship abroad?

Especially the organizational stuff: finding accommodation in advance, registering on site or moving from Berlin.

Please tell us more about your work: What were your main tasks during the internship? Which contents from your studies were reflected in your work or helped you particularly?

As an intern, I had the same tasks as my full-time colleagues in 360° recruiting. This ranged from acquiring new clients (researching leads, making contact, presenting YoungCapital) to organizing the projects (drawing up contracts with the client, writing job ads) and the actual recruiting (screening calls, applicant interviews, selection and presentation to the client) and, for projects with temporary employment, administrative HR tasks for my employees (drawing up employment contracts, payroll administration and being the point of contact for problems). If necessary, headhunting or social media is added if the perfect candidates are not yet among them. Maintaining the customer relationship (regular updates and client meetings on site or online) is also part of the job.

I was able to apply the experience I gained during my studies in personnel selection, especially when conducting screenings and interviews. In addition, but this is less related to the tasks, I was able to observe a lot about the leadership styles learned from A&O psychology. In our team, we got a new manager who did some things differently.

I was able to apply the experience I gained during my studies to the selection of personnel when conducting screenings and interviews.

Did the internship help you with your career aspirations and future plans?

Yes, but: As much fun as I had during my internship and with my applicants, I now know that the HR field is less interesting for me – and that was a great help for me. I realized that I am more interested in analytical tasks and enjoy solving problems. But I still don’t know what that means specifically for my future plans.

What would you recommend to other Media University students for their internship abroad/time abroad?

Not everything can be planned in advance. Sometimes you have to be on the ground to be able to sort things out and a lot of things only come up once you’ve made your first contacts. This may be difficult for some people because people like to plan and want to know what to expect. But you have to take it easy. Nevertheless, it is of course wise to get informed in advance and to take care of everything that can be done in advance (e.g. necessary appointments with the city administration, etc.). But the general recommendation is to go abroad! It really helps you personally and you make cool experiences with new people.

Thank you for the insights into your internship abroad. We wish you continued success and all the best for your career start!
