From Media University to specialist for people and culture

September 6, 2021

Her degree in Business Psychology prepared Vedanti Shinde perfectly for her current job at a Berlin-based artificial intelligence start-up. In an interview, she told us what tasks her new position as People and Culture Specialist entails and where she can make particularly good use of her degree.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Media University?

The first word that comes to mind is “holistic”. For me, the Master’s program in Business Psychology offered a good balance between theory and practical projects. I liked the variety of course modules, from Marketing to User Experience to Human & Organizational Resource Management.

You studied the M.Sc. in Business Psychology. What do you work as now?

I’m currently working as a People and Culture Specialist at an AI start-up here in Berlin, but I also support the Product Development and Marketing departments.

Why did you decide to study business psychology?

After completing my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Mumbai, I was quite unsure about my career path and academic future. After working for a year in the family business Micromaster Laboratories, I realized that I enjoyed applied psychology in an organizational and work context. I started looking for universities in Germany that teach business psychology in English – and came across Media University!

The aspects of studying at the Media University that made me apply for the program were firstly the internationality of the students, secondly that it is a university of applied sciences and not a purely theoretical education, and thirdly that the lecturers have a lot of practical and professional experience. I was very excited when I was accepted at the Berlin campus of the Media University.

What content from your studies is reflected in your work or helps you in your work?

A large part of the course content is part of my current job, especially due to the dynamic and agile working environment of a start-up. The “Human and Organizational Resources Management” course is the most relevant, as I work as a “People and Culture Specialist”. What I learned helped me to establish reliable HR work and implement it with relative ease, taking care to balance teamwork with the strategic aspects of the company. The marketing course came in handy when I started to promote marketing and employer branding activities. And finally, the Business Anthropology and User Experience courses helped me to understand the company’s product well! Thanks to these courses, I was able to develop a customer and user-centered mindset.

What are your plans for the future?

I definitely plan to explore the professional life in Berlin a bit more after getting to know the student life in Berlin thanks to Media University!

What advice would you give to new students?

I would say the best thing about the Business Psychology program is the variety of topics and courses offered under the same roof! Think of all the different groups of people you might encounter at work and there is probably a course that covers that group in more detail. Consumers are covered in Marketing, users in Business Anthropology and User Experience, corporate employees in Human and Organizational Resource Management, and all sorts of other topics in Recent Trends! I would also tell them to be prepared for this knowledge to be used in surprising ways in the practical, fast-paced business world.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We wish you every success in your future career!
