The Master’s degree program in Communication Design and Creative Strategies (M.A.) offers a boost in creativity, specialist knowledge and strategic thinking. It opens up various research-based perspectives on visual and strategic communication, human-centered design, design thinking, persuasive design, brand strategy, innovation, transformation and more.

You will learn to create beautiful, good and meaningful design. But our mission goes even further. We help you to base your design decisions on expert knowledge to guide and communicate with clients and other designers.

The program prepares you to start your own design company or work in design studios, advertising or media agencies, start-ups and consulting agencies – e.g. as an art director, UX designer or product manager.

Course content and teaching

General elective modules: Empirical Social Research, Media Law, Business English, Converging Technological Trends, Media Production, Gamification and Games for Organizations, Intercultural Leadership Skills and Media Psychology

Subject-specific modules: Critical and Creative Thinking, Design and Research, Career Management, Visual Communication, Creative Design Processes, Design Thinking, Human Centered Design, Strategic Communication, Brand Strategy, Persuasion and Engagement, Innovation and Transformation, Design Science, and Exhibition Design

There are also various design projects.

Dual study: The modules differ slightly due to the increased proportion of practical work experience in the cooperating company.

Your profile

Applicants: Graduates of an undergraduate degree course in a design subject area, preferably a design or art degree course (university/university of applied sciences).

Language requirements: Level B2, European Framework of Reference (For non-native speakers, proof of language proficiency in the respective language of instruction is required (Cologne: German, Berlin: English)

Dual study - study and job

The Media University also offers a dual Master’s degree in Communication Design and Creative Strategies: The Master’s degree (M.A.) can be achieved in four semesters on a dual practice-integrated basis. “Dual-practice-integrated” means that students work in a cooperating company parallel to their studies. In addition to imparting theoretical knowledge, practical company projects are integrated into the course. The Media University supports applicants in finding a cooperation company based on its own company network. German language skills at B2 level are required at the time of application to MU (proof of Goethe or Telc language certificate).

Your application should include the following documents:

  • Letter of motivation (max. 250 words)
  • Your curriculum vitae
  • Your university of applied sciences or university entrance qualification
  • Your degree certificate from the undergraduate degree program (Bachelor, Magister, Diplom, etc.)
  • Transcript of Records: credit points and module content descriptions

Your portfolio should include the following aspects:

  • A title page (“cover”)
  • At least three comprehensive graphic design works designed by you (or with a clearly identified contribution from you)
  • Including a description of your work
  • A documentation of the design process
  • A very short summary of the topic of your bachelor thesis (if available)
  • All aspects summarized in one PDF
Crediting

If you already have 210 ECTS from your undergraduate studies, you may be able to shorten your studies by one semester.

State-approved and accredited

The Master’s degree program in Communication Design and Creative Strategies (M.A.) at the Media University is state-approved by the Berlin Senate Administration and accredited by the Accreditation Council.

It therefore meets the highest international academic quality standards.
