Then our Master’s program in Digital Journalism (M.A.) offers you the ideal environment to further develop your journalistic skills. The program focuses on the current trends in the convergence of the classic areas of print, online and audiovisual media, with a special focus on topics from culture, entertainment, business and politics.

Course content and teaching

Special features:
Technical focus: digital production tools and communication channels
Subject focus: culture/entertainment and business/politics
Didactics: theory on the current state of research – and many practical projects!

Competency goal: The program teaches methodological and professional standards of digital journalism as well as the cross-media development of print, audio/video, and social media formats. Cross-media production, data research and multimedia workflows are taught on the basis of sound journalistic principles, supported by modern technology such as 4K cameras and virtual TV studios.

Lecturers with practical experience and participation in industry get-togethers such as the re:publica in Berlin or the DW Global Media Forum in Bonn ensure that students are always close to current media events. They cover events, make contacts and discuss with experts worldwide.

Modules

General elective modules: Empirical Social Research, Media Law, Business English, Converging Technological Trends, Media Production, Gamification and Games for Organizations, Intercultural Leadership Skills and Media Psychology

Subject-specific modules: media system and media ethics, journalism research, journalistic writing, journalistic research, media theories in the digital age, cross-media and digital storytelling, cultural theories and concepts, production of audiovisual formats, convergence of journalistic media, politics, economics, culture and entertainment, as well as two in-depth project modules.

Dual study: the modules differ slightly due to the increased practical component in the cooperating company.

Your profile

Applicants: Graduates of an undergraduate degree in social sciences or humanities (Bachelor, Diplom, Magister) with one of the two specializations:

  • Journalism, Languages, Communication, Media
  • Economics, Social Sciences, Cultural Studies

A wide range of career opportunities

Selected occupations: journalist, editor, publicist, communication and media scientist, content curator, community/social media manager, head of communication, media consultant. Traditional journalism is developing into a digital field of work for convergent media content that is distributed via a wide range of channels and platforms. In some cases, digital journalism experts also find a place to work in corporate press offices, public or cultural organizations, PR agencies or corporate media editorial offices.

Dual studies – study and job

The Media University also offers the Master’s program in Digital Journalism (M.A.) on a dual basis: The master’s degree (M.A.) can be achieved in four semesters in a dual-practice-integrating manner. “Dual-practice-integrating” means that students work in a cooperating company parallel to their studies. In addition to teaching theoretical knowledge, practical projects are integrated into the program. The Media University supports applicants in finding a cooperating company based on its own corporate network. German language skills at B2 level are required at the time of application to MU (proof of Goethe or Telc language certificate).

Credit

If you already have 210 ECTS credits from your undergraduate studies, the program can be shortened by one semester

Recognition

The Master’s program in Digital Journalism (M.A.) at the Media University has been state approved by the Berlin Senate and accredited by the German Accreditation Council.

It thus meets the highest international academic quality standards.
