Background
Dr. Martina Kohl has taught for more than three decades as an adjunct professor at various universities, including the University of Michigan, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Johannes-Gutenberg Universität Mainz, and Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Her seminars are mostly in American Studies, build a bridge from university to professional practice, and have a strong writing component. She is Executive Director of the American Studies Journal (ASJ) and initiator of the American Studies Blog (ASB), to which she contributes occasionally and her students contribute regularly. In her primary job, she works as a Cultural Affairs Specialist in the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Berlin.
Martina Kohl graduated from Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, with an M.A. and a Dr. Phil. in American Studies, English Studies, and Modern/Newest History. She was an exchange student at Florida Souther College and taught various writing courses at the University of Michigan for five years in the English Department, the English Composition Board, and the Business School, among others. Together with her project team at Leuphana University of Lüneburg and at Life e.V. Berlin, she is an award winner of "Ausgezeichnete Orte - Land der Ideen" 2015 for the nationwide e-learning school project "Going Green - Education for Sustainability" and of the Hans-Eberhardt -Piepho Special Award for the "U.S. Embassy School Election Project 2012." She is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Salzburg Global Seminar in American Studies. Her hobby is writing.
