What comes to mind when you think about your studies at Media University?

For me, studying at Media University Berlin was both a challenge and a success. Only a handful of courses were held on-site throughout four semesters due to COVID-19. Although it was hard to focus on online lectures at first, lecturers tried their best to support students to be as engaged as possible using various materials such as case studies, hands-on experiences, etc. I would like to especially thank Prof. Dr. Knuth and Prof. Dr. Kilian.

Why did you decide to study “M.A. International Marketing and Media Management”? And what made you choose Media University Berlin?

Such an exciting curriculum! I studied German language and culture and business administration as a double major. When I was consulting marketing strategies for eye practices in Korea, I recognized that in-depth business knowledge is crucial for my future career in the field of marketing. With basic German skill, Germany was my first option to study abroad but I desired for English courses and more hands-on experiences than theory.

Among numerous curricula, the one at Media University was a perfect match for my needs. As expected, or even better than expected, it was the right choice.

What is your current job position?

Currently, I am a full-time employee as a Global Practice Development Consulting (PDC) Manager at Carl Zeiss Meditec AG in Berlin. Using the strategic marketing approaches I learned at Media University, I work on developing strategies for surgical ophthalmic practices (eye clinics) to achieve business success.

What do you like most about your current job position? What is your biggest challenge?

To provide the customized consultations, acquiring professional knowledge on the medical devices and the eye surgery is crucial. Although learning new knowledge interests me, it is sometimes quite challenging because I do not have a medical degree.

Did you get any further work experiences prior to your current position that you would like to share with us?

Originally, I am from South Korea and joined ZEISS Korea as an intern in 2017 after acquiring a bachelor's degree. Then I worked as a sales representative and a PDC manager providing marketing consultations to practices for laser vision correction. If you have heard of SMILE (SMall Incision Lenticule Extraction) surgery done by a product VISUMAX, or even had one, we successfully increased the awareness of the surgery and the product.

What’s your advice for students who decide to come to Germany/to Media University to study?

Seize the opportunity! Due to the pandemic, I couldn't attend in-person activities including lectures, company visits to Facebook and Ströer, and sessions with external guests. Media University offers so many interesting opportunities along with great lectures in either English or German. As Benedict Cumberbatch exclaimed, you shouldn’t hesitate but “just do!”

Thank you very much for the interesting insights. We wish you all the best for your future career.
